Incident-free day in, day out

Every Tenens driver is trained to operate the refuelling station correctly while wearing standard personal protective equipment. These sensible steps have contributed to the fact the firm hasn’t had a safety incident to date – despite delivering up to 80 refuellings every day.

On-site supply

With refuelling locations limited and concentrated in major trunking areas at present, Tenens decided to build its own natural gas station. The move has provided extra reliability and availability, especially as the company’s economic model relies on using a relatively high volume of gas by operating a large fleet of vehicles.

Given that we are connected to the gas grid, that also gives us security of supply should there be any fuel shortages in the future and ensures we can maintain our delivery commitments to our customers.

Tunnel truth

Despite common misconceptions, gas HGVs can be driven through tunnels. A set of regulations known as ADR restricts large volumes of gas being tankered through them, but gas-powered HGVs are largely unaffected – meaning Tenens vehicles can travel through most UK tunnels.

Long-term savings

Gas HGVs incur higher up-front costs than diesel models – but natural gas fuel is cheaper than diesel. Tenens estimates its vehicles save 8p per mile, enough to provide payback in just under four years of operation.

Going greener

The company also estimates that its compressed natural gas vehicles will provide a CO2 saving of 80% compared to diesel, providing a major step forward in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
