Transport is now the biggest cause of pollution in the UK, according to new government statistics.

While carbon dioxide emissions as a whole fell by six per cent from 2015 to 2016, emissions from transport rose by two per cent for the second successive year.

The legally binding Climate Change Act requires total national emissions to fall by 80 per cent by 2050.
