Annual pollution limit reached in a month
London reached its legal limit for air pollution for the whole of 2018 within the first month of the year, it has been confirmed.
The levels of pollutant nitrogen dioxide at Brixton Road in Lambeth exceeded average hourly limits on 18 occasions within January – the maximum number of times allowed under EU air quality rules.
However, the time taken to reach the limit has improved since 2017, when it took less than a week for them to be hit.
