Diesel and petrol vehicles to be banned

The UK will ban the sale of new diesel and petrol vehicles from 2040, the government has announced.

The commitment matches a French pledge revealed by President Emmanuel Macron, with both sides of the channel keen to improve air quality by encouraging people to switch to low emission vehicles. 

British ministers will also publish a clean air strategy today ahead of a High Court deadline.
